Thirty-four Ephrata Middle School students were inducted into the National Junior Honor Society last Thursday night.
The April 2 ceremony took place at 7 p.m. in the EMS gym. Chapter advisor and EMS history teacher Katie Johnson said candidates must carry a minimum 3.5 GPA and receive approval from a faculty committee review of their character before acceptance. Once in, members are expected to log service hours and take on leadership roles.

NJHS has recognized outstanding middle schoolers since 1929, built around five pillars: scholarship, service, leadership, character and citizenship. The EMS chapter has its own piece of that history, inductees have signed the same membership book since the 1988-89 school year, when Johnson's mother, Kathleen Allstot, served as chapter advisor.
