QUINCY — Five pins powered Ephrata past Quincy 37-28 Thursday night in the Battle of the Basin. Both teams wrapped up Central Washington Athletic Conference dual-meet season ahead of this week's district tournament.

The Tigers and Jackrabbits split the 14 varsity bouts 7-7, but Ephrata's six-point wins made the difference. The Tigers earned five falls, a major decision and a decision.

Louden Leenhouts (106) and Colt Staples (165), both unbeaten in CWAC league duals this season, kept their streaks alive with first-period pins. Caleb Schooler (113) delivered a dramatic finish, falling behind 5-2 after the first period then rallying to tie Kevin Morales at 8-8 and pinning him with just four seconds left in the second. Kylan Lus (132) and Carter Garcia (150) added pins of their own.

Nathan Sandoval (120) rolled to a 9-0 major decision over Johnny Blancas. Danny Wurl gutted out a 4-3 decision over Anthony Averill at 190.

Quincy got pins from Jace Reyes (138), who bested Isaac Barajas after building a 7-0 lead, and Jayden Ortiz over Daron Hernandez at 285. Lucas Martinez (126) earned a 10-5 decision over Mike Ramirez, Jody Gardner (144) edged Riley Richards with an 11-7 decision and Enrique Rebollo (157) posted a 16-8 major decision over Adrian Negrete.

Also for the hosts, Angel Farias gave the Jackrabbits a 9-7 decision over Austin Smith at 175 while Alejandro Barajas won a tight 4-2 decision over the Tigers' Payton Woods at 215.

Thursday was the fourth meeting this season between Woods and Barajas. The Quincy wrestler has won all four, but Thursday's two-point margin was the closest yet after decisions of 10-5, 10-3 and 10-5 earlier in the season. Woods' only other CWAC dual loss came on a 2-2 ultimate tiebreaker against Othello's Miguel Zuniga, putting him squarely in the mix for the district title match.

Ephrata heads to the CWAC District Tournament Feb. 13-14 at Toppenish. The top five wrestlers in each weight class punch their tickets to Mat Classic XXXVII at the Tacoma Dome.
