Fogg & friends bringing high adventure to Masquers stage

SOAP LAKE — Stampeding elephants! Raging typhoons! Runaway trains! Unabashedly slapstick!

Hold onto your seats for the original Amazing Race with the Masquers’ upcoming production of the classic Jules Verne adventure tale, “Around the World in Eighty Days.”

Under the direction of Cynthia Beyer, the play opens Friday, April 10 at the Soap Lake theater with weekend performances continuing through April 26. The curtain lifts at 7:30 p.m. for Friday and Saturday shows; Sunday matinees start at 2 p.m.

See www.masquers.com for ticket information.

Audiences can join fearless adventurer Phileas Fogg of London and his resourceful French valet Passepartout as they seek to win a £20,000 wager from his friends at the Reform Club by circumnavigating the globe in 80 days. But his every step is dogged by Fix, a persistent detective who mistakenly believes that Fogg is a robber on the run.

Danger, romance, and comic surprises abound in a whirlwind show with 10 actors portraying 39 characters traversing seven continents. The cast features Blane Schafer as Phileas Fogg, Patrick Rosman at Passeparout, and Tina Ferrill as both Detective Fix and John Sullivan.

Other multi-character cast members include Kristina Allman, Theseus Berry, Randy Martin, Dave Stearns, Kathleen Rath, Jesse Casey, and Virginia Stearns.

The stage play is adapted by Mark Brown based on Verne’s novel first published in 1872.
