EHS at Eastmont Ladycats Kickoff Classic

EAST WENATCHEE — The Lady Tigers placed fifth with 148.5 points at Saturday's Eastmont Ladycats Kickoff Classic wrestling tournament, which attracted over two dozen schools. Othello won the team title with 236.5 points, followed by Moses Lake (168), Royal (163), and Omak (152).

Carolina Monico was Ephrata's lone individual champion, going 3-0 at 235 pounds with three second-period pins. She opened with a fall over Mia Solano of AC Davis High School (2-0, 1:03 into second period), then pinned Moses Lake's Izzabella Fredley in her second match of the day (1-0, 1:30 into second period). In the final round, Monico battled Zillah's Katrina Heilman to a 6-6 tie before finishing her with a pin 1:39 into the second period.

Tigers Adylene Sanchez (155) and Rayn Castillo (145) each finished second in their respective weight classes. Sanchez went 3-1 with three pins. She fell to eventual champion Abbygale Garza of Wapato by technical fall, 20-4. Castillo went 3-1 with three pins but dropped her championship match to Kittitas' Harlow Best by fall 51 seconds into the first period.

Alexandra Estrada Rangel (135) placed third, going 4-1 with three pins. She lost her semifinal bout to East Valley's Julie Halderman by fall in the second period but rebounded in the consolation bracket, winning her medal match against Davis's Carla Arce by medical forfeit while leading 13-2 in the third period.

Kashlynn Cobb placed fourth at 140, finishing 3-2 with two pins and a disqualification win, and Jasmine Hernandez placed sixth at 105, going 2-3 with one pin.

Also competing for Ephrata were Natali Abundiz (120), who went 3-2 with two pins; Gabbie Bafus (170), who finished 2-2 with two pins; Dawnie Hobrecht (125), who went 0-2; and Alejandra Barajas-Guzman (110), who also went 0-2.

EHS girls vs. Prosser, Grandview

 GRANDVIEW — In a three-team, dual-match meeting Thursday, Ephrata defeated Pross 48-36 in a pinfest with 13 of 14 individual matches all decided by falls. 

Prosser controlled the lower weights through the 130-pound class, with the lone exception at 105 when Ephrata’s Jasmine Hernandez built a 9-0 lead before pinning Madisyn Ibarra in the closing seconds of the second period. From the opening whistle, Hernandez was in control, recording two takedowns, an escape, and a two-point near fall while only surrendering an escape. 

In the upper weights, Ephrata got first-period takedown-and-pins from Kashlynn Cobb (140), Adylene Sanchez (155), Yazmin Barajas (170) , Gabbie Bafus (190), and Carolina Monico (235). 

At 145, Rayn Castillo was unopposed and won by forfeit to add points for Ephrata.

The Tigers also outpointed host Grandview, 48-36, with first-round pins recorded by Hernandez (105), Alexandra Estrada Rangel (135), and Bafus (170). At 110, Ephrata’s Alejandra Barajas-Guzman swapped first-period takedowns and escapes with GV’s Autumn DeLeon before pinning DeLeon in the second period. 

 Picking up forfeit points for Ephrata were Cobb (140) and Tessa Hausken (190). 

 Two Tigers, Dawnie Hobrecht at 125 and Castillo at 145, each wrestled into the third period before dropping 7-3 decisions to their GV opponents. 

 At 235, Monico recorded two near-falls in a spirited first period before getting pinned by the Greyhounds’ Tatiana Tovar. 

The Lady Tigers are back on the mat at home this week hosting Ellensburg Thursday, Dec. 11 at 6pm. Action happens at EHS in the PAC (old) Gymnasium.
