Tiger Track has strong showing at Ice Breaker Invitational
EPHRATA — The Tigers opened the 2026 track and field season with a flurry of individual standouts during Tuesday's Ice Breaker Invitational meet, including strong showings by sophomore distance runner Caleb Fitts and senior jumper/sprinter Alex Belino.
Other competing schools were Brewster, Bridgeport, Cascade Christian (Wenatchee), Chelan, Connell, Entiat, Moses Lake Christian Academy, Oroville, Othello, Soap Lake and Wahluke.
Boys
Fitts owned the distance races. The sophomore swept the 1600 and 3200, winning the mile in 4 minutes, 41.31 seconds (a personal best) and the two-mile in 10:23.46, also a PB. Tiger teammates Niko Diaz placed third in both events (5:01.36 and 11:04.37), and Nathan Wolther was fourth in the 3200 in 11:55.49.
Cooper Black won the 800 in 2:16.35 and placed second in the 1600 in 5:01.03 while Adrian Negrete clocked a personal-best 2:18.59 in the 800 to finish second behind Black.
Competing in both sprints and jumping events, Belino was perhaps the day's most versatile performer. He finished second in the 100 meters (11.82) and 200 (23.44) behind Brewster's Uriah Marcille, who won both events. Belino then won the long jump at 18 feet, 8.75 inches and placed second in the triple jump at 37-4,behind Wahluke's Kobe Corrales (37-6.5). Ephrata's Andy Addink was fifth in the 100 (12.05) and second in the 400 in 53.32 behind Chelan's Holden Alteio (52.69). Casey Melcher and James Cook added fourth and fifth in the triple jump at 37-1.5 and 36-5, respectively. Carson Andrus placed fifth in the high jump (5-6) and fourth in the long jump (18-1).
Also for Ephrata, Maddax Iverson competed well in the hurdles, winning the 110 in 17.31 and placing second in the 300 in 43.39 behind Othello's Jonah Hahn (42.94). Jacob Reyes was third in the 110 hurdles (17.76) and fifth in the 300 hurdles (45.55).
In field events, Tyler Kono threw 121 feet, 9 inches in the discus to tie for second behind Connell's Adam Mauia (138-11). Cooper Kriete placed second in the shot put at 44-3.5 behind Bridgeport's Gabe Tonseth (44-7.5), followed by Calvin Lybbert third at 43-10.5. EHS pole vaulter Jens Bair placed second (10-6) behind Othello's Rylee Hilmes (11-6), with Negrete third (9-6), Wolther fourth (8-6) and Caleb Newton fifth (8-6).
Girls
Addison Vasquez wasted no time making an impression in her first career high school meet. The freshman won the 100-meter hurdles in 18.01 and also competed in the open 100, 300 hurdles and high jump. Bella Wood placed a close third in the 100 hurdles in 18.07.
Tiger Cassidy Cox won the high jump at 4 feet, 6 inches followed by teammates Evangeline Springs was second at 4-4 and Clairissa Johnson third at 4-2. Alexis Edwards placed second in the pole vault (6-0) behind Wahluke's Galleanna Ledesma (7-0), with Ella Schultz and Gracie Hundtoft tying for third at 5-6.
Lila Buchmann launched a personal-best 104-11 toss in the javelin for second place behind Brewster's Pepper Boesel (128-4). In the shot put, Lydia Myrick and Zarianna Garcia placed fourth (28-9) and fifth (28-0) behind Cascade Christian's Ady Hetterle (31-9).
Rebecca Wiser posted personal bests in both distance events, running 2:40.37 for second in the 800 and 5:53.62 for third in the 1600 behind Connell's Lucy Campbell, who won both distance events. Cynthia Villagran ran a 1:09.57 for second in the 400 behind Soap Lake's Sage Hart (1:09.17), with Bailee Morris fourth in 1:12.16. Morris also placed fourth in the long jump at 13-7.5.
Also for Ephrata, Delanie Killinger placed second in the triple jump at 31-3.5 behind Brewster's Pepper Boesel (33-5.5).
Tiger Track will travel to East Valley in Yakima for the Papa Wells Invitational on Saturday, March 21. Action starts at 10 a.m.
