Tigers drop soggy district opener to East Valley, 5-1
YAKIMA — Not the kind of splash they were hoping to make.
Swamped in the second half, Ephrata's Lady Tigers lost 5-1 to league champion East Valley on Saturday in a soggy opening round of the Central Washington Athletic Conference district soccer tournament.
The Tigers trailed just 1-0 at halftime but were unable to overcome the Red Devils' four second-half goals in driving rain at the Yakima Valley school.
"It was a downpour the entire game," Ephrata coach Gary Klepec said. "East Valley was just more ready to play in the conditions. They scored first which caused us to lose our motivation."
Skarlett Sanchez scored Ephrata's only goal unassisted in the second half. Jill Linehan produced two shots on goal while Paige Murray, Brooklynne Addink, and Sanchez each added one. Tiger goalkeeper Aiyana Valle made seven saves in the contest.
Ephrata (4-4) will now host Ellensburg (5-4) in a loser-out elimination match this Tuesday, Oct. 28, while Prosser travels to Quincy for the tournament's other CWAC loser-out game. Both matches start at 5 p.m.
Klepec emphasized the need for a strong start in the elimination contest.
"For the Ellensburg game, we want to go out strong, score the first goal and continue to stay motivated the entire game," he said. "One of our goals for the game is to attack offensively as a unit."
In other weekend conference action, Prosser outlasted Othello 2-1, Selah blanked Quincy 4-0, and Ellensburg topped Toppenish 3-1.
