WVC athletics fundraiser to feature sports media celeb

WENATCHEE — Former ESPN broadcaster Kenny Mayne will headline a fundraising event on Saturday, May 9, to benefit the Wenatchee Valley College Knights athletic program.

Known for his dry wit and humor, Mayne is a WVC graduate and American sports media personality best known for his work on ESPN from 1994 to 2021.

Mayne, 66, grew up in the Kent/Federal Way area and was a record-setting quarterback for the WVC Knights in 1977-78, earning first team All-NWAACC honors. He went on to play for the University of Nevada-Las Vegas before beginning his broadcasting career. Mayne was inducted into the Northwest Athletic Conference’s Hall of Fame in 1998.

The upcoming “Mayne Event” will be held in the Wenatchee Valley College recreation center starting at 5:30 p.m. with a social hour and silent auction. Mayne is then scheduled to do 30 minutes of stand-up comedy, followed by his 30-minute “Wiffle Ball” documentary featuring select sports stars plus a question-and-answer session with the audience.

The evening will also feature a paddle auction and musical performances by the Whiskey Trail Band and Confluence Jazz Trio with Angela Waggoner

The fundraiser is for those age 21 and older. Ticket information is available at https://wvcfoundation.schoolauction.net/wvcmayneevent.

All proceeds will directly beneft the WVC Athletics Program and the college’s student-athletes. The event is sponsored by Weinstein Beverage Company, Draggoo Financial Group LLC, and Smitty’s Pancake House.

(Editor’s trivia note: Mayne suffered a season-ending leg injury during the 1978 season at WVCC and was replaced at quarterback by teammate Bob Bracht, a 1977 Ephrata High School graduate and Tiger athlete who continued his collegiate football career playing for the Whitworth University Pirates in Spokane.)
