Doubles sweep keys Tiger boys' 3-2 tennis win at Ellensburg

ELLENSBURG – A doubles sweep in straight sets carried the Ephrata boys tennis team to a 3-2 road win at Ellensburg on Tuesday, while the Lady Tigers fell 5-0.

Mitch Morford and Avery Morris took first doubles 6-1, 7-5 over Bulldogs James Garcia and Boston Seamons. Tiger teammates Gavin Somes and Peter Sanchez prevailed in their second doubles match 6-4, 6-4, then Yael Hurtado and Ben McLain closed out third doubles 6-3, 6-2.

Ellensburg swept singles play, with Grady Bayne blanking Ephrata's Athen Gault 6-0, 6-0 at first and Sam Rausch topping Jeremiah Alvarez 6-1, 6-0 at second.

For the Lady Tigers, Jill Linehan won her opening set 6-0 over Bulldog Hope Button before dropping the next two 4-6, 0-6 at first singles. Ellensburg's Kate Redfearn topped Kate Maedke 6-0, 6-1 at second.

Ellensburg got straight set wins from Grace Lester and Mckenna Franklin in first doubles 6-1, 6-1 over Kara Davis and Lilly Brewer, and in third doubles with Ephrata's Kaitlyn Wolther and Milli Hope falling 6-2, 6-3. In second doubles, Tiger teammates Maycee Black and Avery Gault pushed their match to three sets, rallying for a 6-3 second set win before falling 5-7 in the third to Annika Youngren and Kyrstin Van Komen.

Ephrata wraps up its regular season this week. The Tiger boys (4-11) and Lady Tigers (2-13) host East Valley today at 4 p.m. with Senior Night, honoring varsity seniors Gavin Somes and Lilly Brewer. Ephrata then closes conference play on Friday with a 4 p.m. match at Toppenish.

In their first meetings, the Tiger boys topped Toppenish 4-1 but fell 5-0 to East Valley. The Lady Tigers earned their only points against either opponent from Wolther and Hope at third doubles.
