EPHRATA — The Tigers swept visiting Grandview on Tuesday, with the boys and girls varsity tennis programs picking up 4-1 and 3-2 victories, respectively.

Jill Linehan's three-set comeback at 1st singles was a decisive moment for the EHS girls. Linehan dropped the first set 1-6 before rallying to take the second 6-0 and close out the third 6-4.

Lilly Brewer and Kara Davis then added a 6-3, 6-2 win at 2nd doubles, and Kaitlyn Wolther and Milli Hope prevailed 6-4, 6-3 in 3rd doubles to seal the Lady Tigers' team victory. The Greyhounds' two wins came after Kate Maedke fell 3-6, 1-6 at 2nd singles and Maycee Black and Avery Gault dropped the 1st doubles match 0-6, 2-6.

On the boys side for Ephrata, Avery Morris was dominant at 2nd singles, defeating Sebastian Benitt 6-2, 6-0. Gavin Somes and Peter Sanchez followed with a 6-1, 6-0 win at 1st doubles, and Grandview forfeited both remaining doubles matches. The Greyhounds' only win came in 1st singles when Christian Downs topped Mitch Morford, 7-5, 6-0.

Coach Greg Becker has taken notice of the Somes-Sanchez combination at 1st doubles.

"We have Gavin Somes, a senior, who plays a calm and controlled game with a measured temperament on the court," Becker said. "We combine him with Peter Sanchez, a freshman and beginning tennis player. Sanchez brings speed and energy from the soccer pitch that is a wonderful complement to the strengths of Somes."

Both Ephrata programs are now 2-7 on the season and the Tigers face a grueling three-matches-in-three-days stretch. They travel to Quincy today for a 4 p.m. match, then return home to face Toppenish on Friday at 4 p.m. and Selah on Saturday at 10 a.m.

Becker said the teams' focus heading into the second half of the season is peaking at the right time.

"We continue to believe that we get better every match," he said. "Our goal is to reach our highest level of play at the district tournament in May."
