EPHRATA — The Ephrata Tigers girls wrestling team dropped a hard-fought 42-39 Central Washington Athletic Conference decision to visiting Othello in a dual meet Tuesday, Jan. 6.

The two squads split seven of 14 varsity matches.

The Huskies built an early cushion with pins over the Lady Tigers' Peighton Black (100), Beyonce Huerta Tapia (110), Natalin Abundiz (115), Dee Bazan (120) and Iris Downs (125).

Ephrata's Natalin Abundiz wrestles for position against Othello's Brooklyn Hillman at 115 pounds Tuesday.

In the early going, Chenille Garcia provided a bright spot for Ephrata in the 105-weight class, pinning Gaby Pruneda in the second period after scoring nine points on a reversal, nearfall and takedown.

The Tigers then stormed back in the middle weights.

Alexandra Estrada Rangel (130) got Ephrata rolling with an 11-9 fall over Ezmee Perez, and Addison Vasquez followed with a comeback pin of Victoria Deleon at 135 after falling behind 8-2 in the second period.

Ephrata's Addison Vasquez works her way to a pin during their 135-pound match. Vasquez trailed 8-2 before rallying with the fall.

Othello stopped the momentum with a first-period pin of Kashlynn Cobb at 140, but Rayn Castillo (145) answered with a gritty 3-1 decision over her opponent, scoring on a takedown.

Tiger star Adylene Sanchez gave Ephrata another quick fall at 155, pinning Karla Guzman in 1:13 after a takedown. Othello battled back with a fall over Gabbie Grace Bafus at 170.

Ephrata's Adylene Sanchez dominates en route to a quick pin at 155 pounds.

The Tigers closed strong in the upper weights. Tessa Hausken (190) needed just 1:12 to pin her opponent after a takedown, and Carolina Monico added six points at 235 via forfeit.

With the team loss, the Tigers dipped to 3-1 in CWAC competition while the win elevated Othello to the same 3-1 record.

The Lady Tigers travel to Kelso this Friday and Saturday, Jan. 9-10, for a two-day tournament. Mat action kicks off at 9 a.m.

Ephrata's girls wrestling team sported pink-accented singlets Tuesday against Othello to raise cancer awareness. "We wanted to look for a way to do that especially, because it's girls wrestling," said the Tigers' Rayn Castillo.
