EPHRATA — Nearly 200 runners, walkers, and young ‘uns in strollers enjoyed mild, sunny conditions as they circumnavigated the Ephrata Lions Club’s 36th  Sage-N-Sun fun run Saturday morning.

Local high school sophomore Caleb Fitts led the field, setting a fast pace on the 2-mile course with a winning time of 10 minutes, 30.2 seconds. Fitts was followed a minute later by runnerup Caleb Schooler, who clocked in at 11:33.6. Both runners are 15 years old.

Hannah Fitts, 17, was the top female runner and placed 15th overall at 14:24.4. Katelyn Goldy, 11, was the ladies' runnerup at 14:28.8 and finished three spots back at 18th overall.

The all-pavement loop course features a burly uphill start on Nat Washington Way adjacent to the Ephrata Middle School playfields, turns onto D Street S.E. and East Division Avenue, then passes through the Columbia Ridge Elementary School neighobrhood before returning to Nat Washington Way and a fast downhill finish on the middle school lawn.

Held in conjunction with Ephrata’s annual Sage-N-Fun festival, the family friendly run enjoyed one of its biggest turnouts in years with 191 entries and 171 finishers, said co-directors Karin Buchmann and Mark Wanke.

They thanked volunteers and sponsors that included the Ephrata Safeway and Walmart stores, Sole Performance, Brooks, Ivan Garay and Culligan Water, Vicious Cycle Racing Club, Ephrata police and the Grant County sheriff’s departments.
