Fitts, Iverson medal as Ephrata closes track season at state
Fitts placed sixth in the 800 and Iverson seventh in the 300 hurdles, while Mills led all CWAC sprinters in the 100.
TACOMA — Ephrata sent four entries to last week's Class 2A state track and field championships at Mount Tahoma High School and came home with medals in two events to finish 31st in the overall team standings.
The competition began with preliminary rounds on Thursday and concluded with finals on Saturday, May 30.
Sophomore Caleb Fitts led the Tigers individually, placing sixth in the 800 meters with a personal-best time of 1 minute, 55.24 seconds. That effort shaved more than one second off his preliminary mark of 1:56.64. In the finals, Fitts finished two spots back of a fellow Central Washington Athletic Conference qualifier, Grandview junior Brendan Kramer, who took fourth at 1:54.57.
The 800 was won by Anacortes senior Dylan Rowell, who ended a decorated distance prep career by setting three state 2A meet records while winning the 800 (1:51.45), 1,600 (4:03.65) and 3,200 (8:50.12).
Rowell heads to Gonzaga University next year, where he will join 2024 Ephrata graduate Hayden Roberts on the GU track and field team.

Senior Maddax Iverson collected the Tigers' other medal. Iverson finished seventh in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 40.35 seconds, advancing one spot after taking eighth in his prelimary round.
East Valley (Yakima) senior Preston Bates posted the top CWAC finish in the event, placing second at 38.86.
Ephrata senior Hunter Mills did not advance out of the 100-meter prelims, placing 14th at 11.16, but he was the top finisher among six CWAC sprinters in the event. Mills turned the tables on two runners who had beaten him at their prior district meet, edging Garen Chapman of East Valley (Yakima), who ran 11.28, and Timothy Hudak of Prosser, who ran 11.29.

Ephrata's 4x400 relay of Iverson, Fitts, Cooper Black and Andy Addink also fell short of the final, running 3:28.22 to place 12th in prelims. Ellensburg was the top CWAC relay, reaching the final and placing seventh at 3:27.00.

Ellensburg led all CWAC schools in state team scoring, placing fifth with 32 points. East Valley (Yakima) was sixth with 26, followed by Grandview (19th, 14), Prosser (27th, 6), Ephrata (31st, 5) and a tie between Othello and Toppenish for 36th at 3 points apiece.
Anacortes ran away with the team title with 81 points scored.
