JAIL INMATE CAUSE OF DEATH
MOSES LAKE – An inmate who was found unresponsive in the Grant County Jail early Tuesday morning died from peritonitis due to a perforated ulcer in his small intestine, the Grant County Coroner’s Office announced following an autopsy conducted Thursday.
The manner of death was classified as natural and no foul play was suspected, said Coroner Craig Morrison.
The deceased inmate was identified as 54-year-old Ruben James Trevino. He had been arrested on Friday, Oct. 31, by Moses Lake police and booked into the Ephrata jail on suspicion of first-degree trafficking in stolen property, third-degree theft, and three outstanding district court warrants.
In a press statement, the sheriff’s office said Trevino was not breathing and had no pulse when found by jail staff around 7 a.m. on Tuesday. Life-saving efforts by staff and emergency medical responders were not successful and he was pronounced dead around 7:30 a.m. At the time, Trevino was in a single-occupancy cell intended for “people in crisis.”
The statement did not specify why Trevino had been placed in the cell, how long he had been there, or whether he received any medical attention while in custody.
Sheriff Joe Kriete requested the Central Basin Investigative Team to conduct an independent investigation which remains ongoing by detectives from the Ellensburg and Othello police departments and Washington State Patrol. Ephrata police Capt. Troy Froewiss is the designated CBIT spokesman for the incident. The sheriff’s office and Moses Lake police are not participating in the inquiry.
