Lady Tigers dominate Ellensburg, take second at Warden Invite

The Ephrata girls wrestling team kept busy last week, bulldozing past Ellensburg 75-6 in a dual Thursday, then finishing second at Saturday's Warden Invitational.


Ellensburg Dual

EPHRATA — The Lady Tigers won 13 of 14 matches in the Dec. 11 romp over the visiting Bulldogs in a Central Washington Athletic Conference matchup.

Leading the way were Jasmine Hernandez (105), Dee Bazan (125), Iris Downs (130), Kashlynn Cobb (140), Adylene Sanchez (155), Gabbie Bafus (170) and Tessa Hausken (190), who all won by fall.

Adylene Sanchez pins her Ellensburg opponent Thursday en route to a 75-6 Ephrata dual win. Two days later at the Warden Invitational, the senior went 3-0 with four falls to win the 155-pound title.

Natalin Abundiz, at 115, earned Ephrata's only decision win, surviving her match with Keetin Daugherty 5-3 after a takedown and reversal.

Padding the Tigers' team score were Peighton Black (100), Dawnie Hobrecht (120), Alexandra Estrada Rangel (135), Rayn Castillo (145) and Estephani Garcia (235), who all won by forfeit.

Gabbie Bafus records a fall at 170 pounds during Ephrata's 75-6 victory over Ellensburg.

Warden Invitational

WARDEN — On Saturday, Adylene Sanchez and Alexandra Estrada Rangel both brought home first-place medals as Ephrata scored 192.5 points to finish second among 18 teams at the invitational. Tonasket topped all teams with 225 points.

Sanchez went 3-0 at 155 pounds with three falls, winning the title with a pin over Tonasket's Milana Pilkington. Estrada Rangel (135) also went 3-0 with three falls, culminating in an all-Ephrata final match against teammate Addison Vasquez. Estrada Rangel secured the win in the first period after a takedown.

Vasquez pinned her first three opponents before her loss to Estrada Rangel in the championship match.

Five other Lady Tigers also finished second: Jasmine Hernandez (105), Dawnie Hobrecht (120), Kashlynn Cobb (140), Vasquez (135) and Carolina Monico (235).

Kashlynn Cobb earns a pin at 140 pounds in Ephrata's 75-6 dual win over Ellensburg on Thursday, Dec. 11. Two days later at the Warden Invitational, Cobb won an exciting 15-14 semifinal decision over Cashmere's Haile James before finishing second.

Hernandez won her opening match with a quick pin, followed in the next round by an 11-9 decision, before falling behind 6-0 in the championship match to Connell's Madison Magana, who went on to win by a fall.

Hobrecht had two quick pins (45 and 42 seconds) over Warden and Cashmere opponents before losing in the finals to Grandview's Heidy Larios Verduzco, who built a 10-1 lead before ending the match with a pin.

Cobb won a 15-14 decision thriller over Cashmere's Haile James in the semifinals before losing to Almira-Coulee-Hartline's Karis Butler by fall in the final round.

Monico posted two first-period pins before getting pinned in the third period of the finals by White Swan's Rianna Jo Castilleja, who was leading 5-1 at the time.

Also for Ephrata, Peighton Black (100) placed fourth, Tessa Hausken (190) took fifth, and Chenille Garcia (110), Rayn Castillo (145) and Mariyah Sabedra (100) each placed sixth.

The Tigers will be on the road Wednesday, Dec. 16, traveling to Cashmere for a tournament.
