SPOKANE — The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather advisory for central and northeastern Washington with a flood watch in effect for Sunday, Sept. 13, beginning at 1 a.m. and continuing into evening.
Weather officials say a slow-moving storm system is expected to bring “persistent bands of rain” through central Washington. Rain intensities will vary from light to moderate with amounts ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 inches of rain.
Potentially affected communities in Grant County include Coulee City, Ephrata, Mattawa, Moses Lake, Quincy, Royal City, and Winchester. In Stevens County, conditions could affect the communities of Addy, Arden, Chewelah, Clayton, Colville, Kettle Falls, Springdale, and Valley.
Excess runoff may result in debris and ash flows over burn scars in steep terrain. The rainfall could trigger rock slides, minor flooding in urban areas where drainage is poor, and clog storm drains and ditches with debris, the Weather Service said.
The chance of overnight rain showers in the Ephrata area is 100%, accompanied by breezy conditions and wind gusts up to 24 mph, the forecast said. Daytime high temperatures are expected to be in the mid- to upper 50s.
Conditions are expected to improve by Monday with gradual clearing and becoming mostly sunny with light winds in the afternoon and a daytime high temperature in the upper 60s.
