EPHRATA — Showing muscle in the middle, Othello won five straight matches from 138 to 157 to pull away for a 42-28 CWAC dual win over Ephrata on Tuesday, Jan. 6.

In the lower weights, the Tigers picked up three wins of their own. After an early takedown, Louden Leenhouts (106) pinned Max Romero in 1:04. Nathan Sandoval (120) cruised to an 11-2 major decision over Xavier Guzman, scoring on three takedowns and a reversal. And Mike Ramirez (132) racked up a reversal, takedown, and three nearfalls in a 17-0 technical fall round over Emmanuel Ayala Jr. in 2:15.

And Ephrata's upper weights kept it close. Colt Staples (165) ground out a 2-0 decision over Zayvier Olazcon with a third-period reversal. Austin Smith (175) added a 13-3 major decision over Ben Meredith with three takedowns, two escapes and a nearfall. Mike Schnegelberger (190) added a forfeit win.

But Othello's midweight group proved too much. The Tigers' Kylan Lus (138), Zxander Williams (144), and Noah Castillo (150) each lost by technical fall and Carter Garcia (157) was pinned in 1:45.

Ephrata was also dealt a setback at 215 when Othello's Miguel Zuniga edged Payton Woods 2-2 in an ultimate tie-breaker, and the Huskies sealed it by picking up a forfeit at 285 .

Ephrata returns to the mats this Friday and Saturday, Jan. 9-10, traveling to Post Falls, Idaho for tournament action.
