Ephrata girls soccer improved its conference record to 2-0 with a 2-1 victory at Grandview on Tuesday, and rallied for a 2-2 tie while facing tall turf and a tough Pullman squad in a nonleague match on Saturday.
EHS freshman Ellie Molitor continued to make her offensive mark, scoring both goals at Grandview, one on an assist from junior Aliyah Lafferty, to push the Lady Tigers to 2-0 in Central Washington Athletic Conference play.
At Pullman, Ephrata trailed 2-1 with under two minutes left when sophomore Brooklynne Addink converted a penalty kick to force the tie. Molitor scored Ephrata's first goal off an Addink corner kick.
"We are proud of our girls, they never gave up," head coach Gary Klepec said.
Field challenges in Pullman forced a change in Ephrata’s game plan.
"Their field grass was so long that the ball wouldn't roll, so we had to change our style of play from lots of passing and possession to more long balls to Ellie and use her speed," he said. "I am pleased with our ability to adjust our play."
Klepec singled out junior keeper Aiyana Valle, who made 10 saves and commanded the back line on an unfamiliar surface.
"She also made one incredible save that kept us from losing the game," Klepec said.
Ephrata put 14 shots on goal against Pullman while playing most of the match without junior Alexis St. Mary after she left the game with an injury.
"We finished the game with only one sub," Klepec said.
Molitor now has eight goals this season and Addink four.
The Lady Tigers are 2-5-2 overall, with two wins and two ties since their last loss at Quincy on Sept. 15.
Elsewhere in the CWAC on Tuesday, Ellensburg handed Quincy its first loss of the season 4-1, Selah edged Othello 3-2, and Prosser beat Toppenish 2-1.
Klepec said he hopes to have St. Mary and sophomore Skarlett Sanchez back tonight (Oct. 1) when Ephrata hosts East Valley (Yakima) at 5 p.m.
EV is 6-2 overall and 2-0 in league play. The Red Devils' only losses came against Yakima's West Valley and Eisenhower, and they have only allowed seven goals in eight matches.
