Tigers pile up personal bests at Van Kuren Invitational
CHENEY — The Tigers racked up personal and season bests at the 2026 Van Kuren Invitational Saturday, April 18 at Cheney High School.
The meet drew several hundred athletes from more than 30 schools from Eastern Washington, North Idaho and Eastern Oregon.
Boys
Ephrata senior Maddax Iverson placed fifth in the 300-meter hurdles in a season-best 40.93 and eighth in the 110s at a personal-best 16.20. Teammate Jacob Reyes followed him in both races, finishing seventh in the 300s at a season-best 43.40 and 13th in the 110s in 17.08. Cheney junior Colton Hallett swept the hurdles in 14.51 and 39.23.

Dropping 28 seconds in the 3200 so far this season, Tiger sophomore Caleb Fitts ran a personal-best 9:55.45 to place 10th behind winner Miguel Fuentes of Hermiston (9:41.12). Niko Diaz took 29th in 10:48.33.
Cooper Black clocked a season-best 2:07.81 for 11th in the 800, won by Grandview junior Brendan Kramer in 1:56.16. Also for Ephrata, Connor Liffengren set PBs in both the 800 (2:19.43) and the 1600 (5:14.95). Andy Addink placed ninth in the 400 at 52.81 behind Lewis and Clark sophomore Jacob Gering (50.08).
Tiger sprinters Casey Melcher ran a personal-best 11.80 in the 100, Lance Melum clocked a PB 24.98 in the 200 and a season-best 56.12 in the 400, and Chance Lee set bests in the 100 (12.24) and 200 (25.39). North Central (Spokane) senior Adie Wright swept the 100 and 200 in 10.59 and 21.59, respectively.
Their 4x100 relay team of Lee, Addink, Melcher and Iverson placed ninth in 45.23; Sandpoint won in 42.34.
EHS throwers delivered two top-10 finishes. Tyler Kono took fifth in the discus at a personal-best 140 feet, 11 inches, behind Hermiston's Angel Ordaz Garcia (155-2). Calvin Lybbert was sixth in the shot put with a PB of 46-9; Hermiston senior Maxem Shilhanek won the event at 54-4.
Cooper Kriete placed eighth in the shot (46-1 SB) and 10th in the discus (135-8). Jacob Bartlett launched a personal-best 137-5 in the javelin and Micah Sandberg threw a season-best 131-8. Cheney junior Jackson Randall won the event at 184-8.
Girls
Bella Wood led the Lady Tigers with an eighth-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles at a season-best 16.98. East Valley (Spokane) junior Weather Salinas-Taylor won the race in 15.02.

Addison Vasquez competed in three events. The EHS freshman ran a personal-best 13.79 in the 100, 18.23 in the 100 hurdles for 17th and 54.33 in the 300 hurdles for 18th. Brinlea Ohl placed 19th in the 300s in 55.77. Cheney sophomore Aniyah Hagan won the 300 hurdles in 47.55.
Ephrata distance runners Hannah Malone and Savannah Harper finished 12th and 13th in the 3200 meters. Malone clocked a season-best 12:51.92 and Harper 12:52.38. Central Valley sophomore Aubrey Harvey won in 11:29.17.

Jasmine Hernandez posted a season-best 1:05.87 in the open 400 behind Ridgeline senior Kali Rothrock (57.17). Back from an injury, Abigail Chamberlain ran a season-best 6:01.03 in the 1600; won by Ridgeline freshman Kalia Blanchard in 5:17.71.
Amya Seblario clocked a season-best 29.32 in the 200 and Staci Guerrero set a PB of 29.55 in the same race, won by East Valley (Spokane) junior Ashlynn Deaton in 25.18. Lewis and Clark sophomore Charlotte Dix took the 100 at 12.30.
The Lady Tigers 4x100 team of Seblario, Guerrero, Delanie Killinger and Alexis St. Mary placed 10th in 54.00; East Valley (Spokane) won that relay in 48.73. The EHS quartet also went 13th in the 4x200 relay at 1:56.64 behind Spokane winner Lewis and Clark (1:45.60).
In field events, Lila Buchmann led the Lady Tigers with a javelin throw of 95 feet, 7 inches for 12th, behind Cheney freshman Allie Saccomanno (119-10). And Bailee Morris placed 27th in the long jump at 13-1; Deer Park senior Jacey Boesel won at 16-8.75.
Tiger Track returns to action this week for the first Central Washington Athletic Conference meet of the season at Selah, joining the host Vikings and Toppenish for the league opener Thursday, April 23 with events beginning at 2:30 p.m.
