YAKIMA — Ephrata senior Payton Woods captured the 215-pound championship at the Eisenhower Cadet Classic on Saturday, Dec. 20, leading the Tigers to a 10th-place finish out of 20 teams competing in Yakima.
Woods went 4-0 with three pins before an overtime victory against Cashmere's Grey Jacobson in the finals. After the match was tied 5-5 through regulation, Woods ended it with a seven-point move in the first overtime.
"Payton caught the kid in a head and arm towards the end of the first overtime period," Ephrata coach Joe Knox said. "It was a seven-point move and the first point wins in the first overtime."
Adrian Negrete (165) made a run to the finals with a 13-1 major decision, a pin and a technical fall in the semifinals before falling to Wenatchee's Michael Mahuika in the championship match.
"That was a great tournament for him," Knox said. "He ran into a buzzsaw in the finals."
At 106, Louden Leenhouts continued to impress with a third-place finish, going 3-1 and beating a Selah wrestler in the consolation finals. His only loss was a decision to White Swan's Maximilliano Espindola in the semifinals.
The Tigers also got a fourth-place finish from Colt Staples (175), fifth from Nathan Sandoval (126) and sixth from Mike Ramirez (138). Ramirez defaulted his final two matches after falling ill during the tournament but was back at practice Monday.
Ephrata scored 158.5 team points. Eisenhower won the team title with 278 points and four champions, followed by Kennewick (235) and a tie for third between Selah and Wenatchee (206.5).
