Toppenish capitalizes early to top Ephrata 3-1
Jill Linehan (5) turns a ball back toward the Toppenish goal in the Tigers 3-1 loss at home Tuesday, Oct. 14. Ephrata wore pink jerseys in honor of coaches battling cancer.

EPHRATA — Surrendering two early goals proved costly for Ephrata in Tuesday’s match against Toppenish, as the Tigers fell, 3-1, in the Central Washington Athletic Conference contest.

Toppenish struck twice in the opening minutes, forcing Ephrata to play from behind for much of the match. The Tigers settled in as the half continued, creating consistent pressure on offense.

Ephrata’s solo score came from Skarlett Sanchez, who finished off a pass from Jill Linehan midway through the first half to make it 3-1. Despite several strong looks in the second half, the Tigers couldn’t close the gap.

Sanchez led Ephrata with five shots on goal, followed by Brooklynne Addink and Delanie Killinger with four each. Paige Murray added two, while Linehan and Sophie Molitor each recorded one. Keeper Aiyana Valle tallied three saves in the loss.

Head coach Gary Klepec said the Tigers remain one of the closest groups he’s coached. He noted that the players continue to support and rally around one another, even when challenges arise.

The Tigers are also managing several key injuries. Brooklynn Sieverkropp left Tuesday's game with a concussion, Lila Rainey has been sidelined since the Quincy game with a torn ACL, and Jill Linehan is questionable for Saturday’s match after taking a ball to the jaw. Despite the setbacks, Klepec said the group remains positive and united heading into the final stretch of the season.

Saturday will also mark a milestone for the program's "veterans" as the Tigers celebrate Senior Night, recognizing a large and accomplished class. Klepec said this year’s group of 11 seniors is the biggest he’s ever coached and one of the most special. Two members plan to continue playing soccer in college – a goal which Klepec said the program takes pride in encouraging – while others will graduate having built lasting friendships and memories through four years of competition.

Ephrata, now 2-4 in the CWAC standings, will host Prosser (3-2) this Saturday in its final home match of the regular season. The Tigers, who hope to finish strong and build momentum as the postseason approaches, close out league play next week at Grandview (2-4).
