Ephrata sustained a narrow 3-2 baseball loss at Quincy Tuesday to the Basin-rival Jackrabbits after being swept in a doubleheader at Othello on Saturday.

It continued a rough stretch for the Tigers, who managed only four runs on 14 hits while striking out 37 times. The three losses left them with a 2-11 record and eighth place in the Central Washington Athletic Conference with three league games remaining in the season.

The host Jackrabbits managed to score twice in the first inning without a hit, taking advantage of a pair of walks and two hit batters.

In the second inning, the Tigers’ Clayton Wolther took over for starter Kai Kaleohano and had a solid outing in relief, pitching five innings and allowing only three hits while striking out 10, including retiring the side on strikeouts in the sixth.

Ephrata got on the board in the top of the fourth. Cooper Vasquez reached base on a fielder's choice, advanced on a balk, took third on a catcher's error, then scored on Wolther's RBI single to left.

Quincy answered in the bottom of the fourth. Center fielder Pierce Bierlink walked, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and scored on another wild pitch during catcher Caleb Kukes' strikeout.

Ephrata cut the lead to one in the sixth. Caleb Froewiss singled and Vasquez doubled him home.

But Quincy pitcher Ashton Keller preserved the win with three strikeouts in the top of the seventh. Keller finished a complete game with 11 strikeouts on 102 pitches.

Ephrata scored in the third. Johnson walked, Vasquez singled to left and courtesy runner Dayne Holland – replacing Johnson - scored on a fielding error.

Vasquez took the pitching loss for Ephrata. He gave up five hits, two earned runs and three walks with four strikeouts over six innings. Othello broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the fifth. Wolther came in to close the seventh and allowed two more.

Froewiss, Vasquez and Cannon DeLong produced the Tigers' three hits.

April 18 at Ephrata — Othello 17, Ephrata 1, Game 2

The morning loss was competitive against the Huskies, who have allowed just eight runs — including the Tigers’ two scores — in 11 CWAC games. But Othello’s offense asserted itself in the five-inning afternoon game.

Left fielder Elijah Davis rounds first on his way to a standup double during Saturday's second game against Othello.

The Huskies scored three runs in the first, one in the second, eight in the fourth and five in the fifth. Centerfielder RJay Garza led the charge, batting 3-for-4 with four RBI including a three-run homer in the fourth that was the knockout blow.

Cale Fronsman took the pitching loss for Ephrata. He struck out 11 over 3-1/3 innings but gave up 10 hits and seven runs (four earned). Aiden Garza earned the win for Othello with nine strikeouts over four scoreless innings.

Ephrata's lone run came in the fifth inning. Johnson singled, moved to second on a groundout by Krue Judkins and scored on Vasquez's RBI single.

The Tigers host Quincy in a rematch on Tuesday, April 28 at 4:30 p.m. and close the regular season with a doubleheader at Ellensburg on Saturday, May 2. First pitch is at 11 a.m.

At 10-1, Ellensburg currently shares first place with East Valley in the CWAC standings.

Ephrata baseball will host a youth camp after school Thursday April 23 and Friday, April 24 at Johnson-O'Brien Stadium. The camp is open to students in second through sixth grade. Registration is $50 per camper and includes a T-shirt. More information can be found here.
