The deceased man allegedly leveled a rifle toward law enforcement officers.
MOSES LAKE — Grant County sheriff’s deputies were involved in the fatal shooting of a man allegedly armed with a rifle Monday evening near Moses Lake.
The sheriff’s office posted initial information about the incident on its Facebook page, but did not immediately identify the deceased man, saying his name would be released by the Grant County Coroner’s Office.
This morning, the coroner’s office said an autopsy was scheduled today and more information would be available afterward.
An unspecified incident initially reported around 4:30 p.m. Monday prompted sheriff’s deputies and Moses Lake police to respond to a rural location in the 4700 block of Road L.9-NE, where a male subject was seen walking around the property.
According to the sheriff’s office, deputies and officers searched several outbuildings and vehicles and located the man inside a small barn.
The man allegedly emerged from the barn with a rifle that was leveled toward law enforcement officers. The sheriff’s office said five deputies fired their service weapons, but no Moses Lake officers discharged their firearms.
The report did not specify whether the man discharged his rifle. No officers were injured in the incident.
Law enforcement and emergency medical responders rendered aid to the man, but he died at the scene, the report stated.
The incident will be investigated by detectives from other area law enforcement agencies involved with the Central Basin Investigative Team in coordination with the Washington State Office of Independent Investigations.
Neither the sheriff’s office or Moses Lake Police Department will participate in the shooting inquiry.
