Pioneer Day planned at Grant County Museum
EPHRATA — The Grant County Historical Museum and Village will host its annual season-ending event, Pioneer Day, on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Admission is free or by donation on that day.
Volunteers will be manning the museum’s various buildings, relating the experiences of the county’s early pioneers, including their clothing, households, lifestyles, schooling, work environments, tools, and more.
“This is a great fun day for kids, where they can see a cowboy shootout and do laundry like a pioneer,” said museum staff in an online post.
Located at 742 Basin St. N.W., the museum is also open this Thursday and Friday, Sept. 10-11. General admission rates apply then.
After Saturday, the museum will close for the season, but reopen next May.
Patriot Day, 9/11 remembrance ceremony
EPHRATA — American Legion Art Semro Post/Unit 28 will host a public ceremony on Friday, Sept. 11, in observance of the 25th anniversary of the terrorism attacks on American soil in 2001.
The ceremony is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on the front lawn of the Grant County Courthouse in Ephrata.
There will be tributes to first responders for their heroism during the 9/11 attacks, and to police, fire, and emergency services providers in this area who continue to serve local communities. It’s suggested that those who attend next Friday’s ceremony bring lawn chairs for their personal comfort at the event.

“A library card gets you far more than books,” said Tim Dillman, the system’s associate director of community libraries, in a recent press release. “It connects you to free programs, homework help, job and career resources, printer and copier services, streaming movies and music, cultural events, technology, and opportunities to learn something new.”
“The library belongs to all of us. One card connects each of us to a world of possibilities. When more people are connected, our communities are stronger,” said Dillman.
Patrons ages 18 and older can apply online for a free library card. Both adults and children can also register in person at one of NCW Libraries’ 30 branches or a community bookmobile in the service areas of Chelan, Douglas, Ferry, Grant, and Okanogan counties. Applicants will need photo identification and proof of address (such as a mailed letter, utility bill or vehicle registration). Persons experiencing homelessness are also eligible for library services and staff can assist in alternate verification options.
In Grant County, NCW public libraries are located in Coulee City, Ephrata, George, Grand Coulee, Mattawa, Moses Lake, Quincy, Royal City, Soap Lake and Warden. The Ephrata library is undergoing remodeling and not all services are currently available.
Man dies after tractor rolls into canal
MATTAWA — A Mattawa man died Friday, Sept. 4, after the farm tractor he was operating rolled into an irrigation canal, reported the Grant County Sheriff’s Office.
Ricardo Santos Estrada, 49, was driving the tractor along a canal road near the 23000 block of Road K-SW when the tractor apparently traveled too close to the edge and the embankment caved in, investigators said.
Santos, who was trapped beneath the tractor when it rolled into water, was pronounced dead at the scene, the sheriff’s report stated.
The accident was reported around 2:20 p.m. The victim’s family was notified and an autopsy was planned by the Grant County Coroner’s Office.
