Lady Tigers roll past East Valley; mat showdown looms at Quincy
YAKIMA — Ephrata's girls wrestling team topped host East Valley 54-30 on Thursday, Jan. 29, winning nine of 13 matches as the Lady Tigers tune up for the final week of Central Washington Athletic Conference dual action.
Six of the Tiger wins came by fall. Chenille Garcia (110), Natalin Abundiz (115), Kashlynn Cobb (140), Emily Estrada Rangel (145), Adylene Sanchez (155) and Gabbie Grace Bafus (170) all pinned their opponents. Mayah Ferguson (135) added a 7-1 decision, and Emma Lopez (120) and Iris Downs (125) won by forfeit.
East Valley's Kalixta Diaz (100) edged Peighton Black 6-5 in a tight decision. Mina Mirelez (105) pinned Mariyah Sabedra, and Julie Halderman (130) pinned Alexandra Estrada Rangel in the second period. The Red Devils also picked up forfeit wins at 190 and 235 pounds.
Tessa Hausken (190) and Carolina Monico (235) sat out with minor injuries but should return soon, according to Tiger head coach Raul Tejeda.
Last week's win sets up a showdown this Thursday at Quincy with third place in the CWAC standings on the line. The Jackrabbits also sit at 5-2, with both teams' only league losses coming against Toppenish and Othello.
The Lady Tigers fell to Othello 42-39 in a nail-biter and lost to Toppenish 56-18. Quincy dropped lopsided duals to both: 52-21 against Othello and 66-12 to Toppenish.
State rankings tell a similar story. Ephrata checks in at No. 3 in Washington Wrestling Network's Class 2A girls poll, behind only Othello and Toppenish. Quincy sits at No. 6.
The upcoming dual is the final league match before districts Feb. 13-14 at Grandview High School.
