Survey to help shape SL comp plan
SOAP LAKE — Soap Lake-area residents are invited to take part in an online survey to help provide focus to upcoming public workshops by the City of Soap Lake in updating the city’s comprehensive plan.
The brief survey asks readers their views on:
— new building construction in proximity to such areas as shorelines, wetlands, and geological hazards;
— regulations governing zoning, developer standards, and property subdivisions;
— prioritizing various planning elements including housing, economic development, utilities and capital facilities, parks and recreation, transportation, and overall land use;
— identifying local organizations that can help guide the comprehensive plan and community’s vision for the future.
Alex Kovach, the city’s planner and building official, encouraged citizens to share information about the survey and comp plan update with individuals and community-based organizations.
Ultimately, an updated plan will be submitted to the Washington Department of Commerce for review and approval. Authorized comp plans are often needed by municipalities in pursuing state grants and loans.
EPD reminds motorists of local schools’ start
EPHRATA — Police are reminding drivers to slow down and be alert for increased pedestrian and vehicle traffic on local roadways with students returning to Ephrata schools beginning this Thursday, Sept. 3.
When children are present, the speed limit is 20 mph in school zones, which are designated by signs and flashing yellow lights. Drivers should stay off their phones, be prepared to stop for pedestrians at intersections and crosswalks, and look out for youngsters who may dart into traffic.
GC Fire District 7 slates Sept. 10 open house
LAKEVIEW PARK — Grant County Fire District No. 7 invites the community to a free open house planned Thursday, Sept. 10, from 6-8 p.m. at its Lakeview station, 155 SR 28 West.
The family-friendly event is open to all ages. It will include firefighter and fire safety demonstrations, use of the Jaws of Life extrication tools, tours of the fire engines and ambulance, information about the district’s cadet program, a “junior firefighter challenge,” and catering by Jimmy’s Hot Dogs.
There will also be information available regarding the fire district’s EMS levy proposition scheduled for the November election ballot.
Autism Community Day planned Sept. 19
EPHRATA — The Autism Support Group of Grant County will host its annual Autism Community Day on Saturday, Sept. 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Grant County Courthouse lawn.
The festive, family-friendly event as “a day of community, connection, and acceptance for all," say organizers. Community resource providers will be on hand, along with area first responders and the Grant County Sheriff’s Posse.
Free activities include bounce houses for kids, face painting, DIY tie-dye shirts, and a photo booth. The event concludes with an optional group hike to the Autism Ribbon overlooking Ephrata on Beasley Hill.

‘Stampa-Palooza’ on tap for Free Family Saturday
MOSES LAKE — The City of Moses Lake’s Museum & Art Center will be stocked up for stamping this Saturday, Sept. 5.
‘Stampa-Palooza’ is the theme for the MAC’s monthly Free Family Saturday event, scheduled from noon to 2 p.m. There will be a variety of stamps, ink pads, and cardstock available for kids and adults to create custom projects and designs.
Although free, advance registration is required. Families may sign up for a free year-long pass at the museum’s registration portal.
“Stampa-Palooza is an opportunity to bring the family to the museum and create a fun craft without having to worry about cost or cleanup,” the center said in a press release. “Stick around after Free Family Saturday to play a game of giant chess or explore our latest history show featuring Moses Lake stories.”
