ML MAC reception kicks off commemorative displays

MOSES LAKE — On Friday, May 15, the City of Moses Lake Museum & Art Center will host a special public event, Faces of 250: Our Community in Portraits and Words, plus other activities which share a local historical perspective in advance of the nation’s 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

The opening reception is scheduled from 4-7 p.m. Admission is free and visitors can enjoy gallery exhibits, a public lecture, live weaving demonstration, an adult craft activity, and servings of hot dogs, apple pie, and other American classics.

The feature exhibit showcases a collection of studio portraits from the 1950s to ‘70s taken at Hilderbrand’s Photography Studio which capture the style, optimism, and evolving identity of mid-century America. The museum has also partnered with the Washington State Historical Society to bring Moments that Made Us to the gallery. This exhibit highlights ideals at the heart of the Declaration of Independence through moments in our nation’s history.

There will also be a display of snapshots submitted in a community photo contest, Moses Lake: Through My Lens, featuring images captured by local photographers of all ages of what best represents Moses Lake to them.

At 6 p.m., Humanities Washington speaker Lawrence Hatter will present a free public talk exploring “the strange duality of the Revolutionary War,” followed by a question-and-answer session.

And from 4-6:30 p.m., visitors age 18 and older can make their own patriotic dahlia paper wreath at Art After Hours, a program designed specifically for adults to craft and create.

The museum is located at 401 S. Balsam St. in the Moses Lake Civic Center. Regular hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free. Visit the museum’s website at moseslakemuseum.com and follow on Facebook and Instagram.
