One dead, two hurt in separate collisions near Moses Lake

One driver arrested on suspiciion of DUI, vehicular assault.

MOSES LAKE — One man was killed and two others were injured in separate collisions Tuesday, Oct. 13, near Moses Lake.

At 12:11 p.m., Grant County sheriff’s deputies were notified of a two-vehicle wreck at the intersection of Roads 3-NE and U-NE.

Authorities said Michael J. Tschetter, 29, of Saskatchewan, Canada, was driving west on Road 3 in a semi tractor with trailer and had slowed to turn south onto Road U-NE. The front of the semi was struck by an eastbound 2011 Audi A4 sedan driven by Dawson Kilmer, 23, of Lind, who came over a rise in the roadway at a high rate of speed about 900 feet west of the intersection and was unable to stop in time to avoid a collision, the report stated.

Kilmer sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene; Tschetter received non-life-threatening injuries from the wreck. It was not specified whether either driver was wearing a seat belt.

Authorities did note the posted speed limit on Road 3-NE is 60 mph. The collision closed the intersection to traffic for almost six hours, reopening at 6:15 p.m.

Along with sheriff’s deputies, cooperating agencies included Grant County Fire District No. 5, Grant County public works personnel, Washington State Patrol, Grant County coroner’s office, and MACC 911 dispatch.

At 5:09 p.m. Tuesday, State Patrol troopers responded to a two-vehicle wreck about three miles southeast of Moses Lake.

According to the WSP report, 30-year-old Iveth Hernandez of Moses Lake was driving west on Road 2-SE and entered the intersection at State Route 17. Her 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV struck a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze sedan driven by Jerry W. Fike, 73, Moses Lake, who was northbound on the highway.

Fike sustained unspecified injuries and was transported to Samaritan Hospital in Moses Lake. It was unknown whether he was wearing a seatbelt. Hernandez, who was wearing a seatbelt, was not hurt in the collision.

Troopers said Hernandez was under the influence of alcohol or drugs and failed to yield the right-of-way, causing the wreck. She was arrested and booked into the Grant County Jail on suspicion of DUI and vehicular assault.

Both vehicles were totaled.
