'Six by Six' art show brightens Soap Lake Library
It's true: good things do come in small packages.
SOAP LAKE — The old proverb, “Good things come in small packages,” was evident in the inaugural “Six by Six Community Art Show” hosted at the Soap Lake Public Library.
Over 100 original, handmade, wall-hanging multi-media entries submitted by artists of all ages and experience levels made for a successful show, organizer Nels Borg said on Saturday.
“A lot of people took part,” he said.
The show, which opened in mid-February, was supported by the Soap Lake Creative District, Friends of the Soap Lake Library, and NCW Libraries. Its theme focused on“big ideas in a small format” — all pieces selected for entry could measure no larger than 6 inches square including frame.
Paint, fiber, collage, wood and other handmade media were eligible with an emphasis on creativity and craftsmanship. Artists could submit up to five pieces for consideration. Accepted artwork was available for sale at $25 per piece with all proceeds going to the artist.
Collectively, the diverse entries lived up to the show’s aspirations, filling the library with “creativity, imagination, and community spirit.”
Borg said the Soap Lake event was inspired by a friend’s annual artshow held at the Bright Place Gallery in Bend, Oregon.
Looking forward, Borg said there will future consideration of a venue which could offer increased viewing days and hours for the public and more opportunities to handle art sale transactions.
