After dropping their last two matches, Ephrata girls soccer faces a loser-out District 5 contest at home against Othello at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27.
The Lady Tigers lost 3-1 at East Valley (Yakima) in the first round of the district tournament on Saturday, Oct 24.
Sophomore Skarlett Sanchez put the first goal on the board with a header off a corner kick from sophomore Brooklynne Addink, but East Valley answered the same way shortly after, and the teams were tied 1-1 at halftime.
East Valley scored the go-ahead goal midway through the second half on a cross from the wing, said Ephrata head coach Gary Klepec. The Lady Tigers pushed players forward in the final minutes looking for an equalizer, but the Lady Red Devils used the space left open behind them to seal it with a third goal in the last two minutes.
Freshman Ellie Molitor led the Tiger offense with three shots on goal, and junior keeper Aiyana Valle made 12 saves.
The East Valley match was "very physical," said Klepec, but an improvement over Ephrata's 2-1 league-finale loss at Prosser on Oct. 20.
"Against East Valley we played a better game," he said.
At Prosser, Klepec said the Lady Tigers struggled in the first half and trailed 2-0 at the break.
“We played a much better second half, but just couldn’t score the two goals to get back into it,” he said.
Junior Jillian Linehan posted Ephrata's lone score, finishing a cross from Sanchez with a shot into the right corner. Linehan and Addink led the Lady Tigers with five shots apiece on offense, and Valle made 12 saves on the defensive side.
"We had a lot of shots on goal, just not able to finish," Klepec said.
The Lady Tigers finished third in the Central Washington Athletic Conference at 5-3 and are 5-9-2 overall.
Looking ahead to this Tuesday, Klepec said he feels good about the matchup but expects a tough test against Othello. The No. 6 Lady Huskies are coming off a 4-1 victory over No. 7 Prosser in a district play-in game on Saturday.
Ephrata and Othello split in two meetings earlier this season. Othello beat the Lady Tigers 3-2 at Ephrata in a nonleague match in September, but Ephrata won the rematch 3-2 in double OT thriller at Othello on Oct. 13.
Tuesday's match begins at 5 p.m. at the Ephrata High School soccer complex. Tickets for district games are sold online through GoFan. Adult tickets are $11.50 and student and senior tickets are $6.25, including service fees.
Volleyball closes league play with a loss at Prosser, draw East Valley play-in
PROSSER — Prosser swept Ephrata 25-8, 25-21, 25-15 on Tuesday, Oct. 20, in the Lady Tigers’ final Central Washington Athletic Conference match of the season.
Ephrata finished 1-7 in league play and 3-12 overall.
The Tigers head to Yakima this Wednesday, Oct. 28 for a loser-out, district play-in bout at East Valley. First serve is 6 p.m. Ephrata enters as the CWAC’s No. 8 seed, East Valley as the No. 5.
Previously, the teams met on Oct. 1 in Ephrata when the Red Devils won in four competitive sets. The Lady Tigers took the opener 25-18 and pushed East Valley to extra points twice after that, narrowly losing the second set 26-28 and the fourth 24-26.
