Ephrata junior Jill Linehan (5) carries the ball as Quincy's freshmen twins Briellah Longwill (6) and Allanah Longwill (2) close in during the Lady Tigers’ 2-1 win Oct. 15 in Ephrata. Linehan scored both Ephrata goals, and the Lady Tigers held Allanah Longwill, who scored three times in Quincy’s 4-1 victory over the Lady Tigers Sept. 15, off the scoresheet.

EPHRATA — Quincy came to town during Ephrata’s homecoming week and left with two losses.

In soccer, the Lady Tigers beat the Lady Jackrabbits 2-1 on Oct. 15 for their third straight win and a guaranteed spot in the District 5 tournament. On the same night, Ephrata volleyball earned its first win in Central Washington Athletic Conference play with a four-set victory over the visiting Jackrabbits.

During Thursday's soccer rematch, Tiger junior Jill Linehan scored both goals, one in each half, on assists from sophomore Skarlett Sanchez and senior Brooklynn Sieverkropp. Ephrata led 1-0 at halftime and 2-0 until Quincy's Julissa Madera scored in the final two minutes.

The win clinched the CWAC No. 3 seed for the District 5 tournament before Ephrata's league finale at Prosser today (Tuesday, Oct. 20).

Quincy beat Ephrata 4-1 on Sept. 15, putting 21 shots on goal to the Lady Tigers' 12. This time, Ephrata commanded offensive control and took 14 shots on goal to Quincy's 10, said head coach Gary Klepec.

"We really shut them down this time around," Klepec said. "We controlled midfield, which helped us win the game."

Klepec credited Sieverkropp and sophomore Sophie Molitor for controlling the middle of the field and praised the entire back line.

"Aiyana had another great game," he said of junior keeper Aiyana Valle. On offense, Linehan now has three goals this season.

"This team is very close knit," Klepec continued, saying his players have grown even closer during the three-game win streak.

Ephrata is now 5-7-2 overall and 5-2 in league play. The Lady Jacks drop to 4-3 in CWAC and 11-4 overall.

Ellensburg and East Valley, each with 6-1 records, currently share first place in the conference standings heading into Tuesday's finales, with Ellensburg facing Grandview and East Valley playing Othello. Ellensburg's lone league loss came against Othello, and East Valley's came just a week ago against Ellensburg.

The Lady Tigers open the district tournament at noon Saturday at the CWAC's No. 2 seed. The winner of the opening round advances to the district semifinals, and the loser moves to a quarterfinal match.

Volleyball

Ephrata beat Quincy 25-16, 25-23, 19-25, 25-10 in a Thursday Homecoming Week contest to achieve its first Central Washington Athletic Conference win of the season. It was also the Lady Tigers’ second victory this fall over the Jackrabbits, who are 0-7 in league play and 0-13 overall.

Ephrata moves to 1-6 in the CWAC and 3-11 overall. The Tigers conclude conference play today (Tuesday, Oct. 20) at Prosser, which sits third in the league at 5-2, 10-3, and swept Ephrata 25-18, 25-18, 25-9 on Sept. 17.

A district play-in match for the Lady Tigers is set for Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 6 p.m. Ephrata enters as the CWAC’s No. 8 seed and will travel to the No. 5 seed, which is still unsettled. Othello, Grandview and East Valley are currently tied for fifth at 3-4. Othello hosts East Valley and Grandview hosts 7-0 Ellensburg in final matches tonight. East Valley swept Othello 25-11, 25-13, 25-18 when the two met in nonleague play earlier this season.
