Five Tiger boys punch state track tickets at CWAC district meet
Four entries and five athletes from Ephrata are headed to the state meet at Mount Tahoma next week.
QUINCY — Five Tiger runners punched tickets to state at last week's WIAA Class 2A District 5 track-and-field championships in Quincy, advancing in four events to Mount Tahoma High School.
Senior Maddax Iverson booked his spot in the 300 hurdles, senior Hunter Mills in the 100 and sophomore Caleb Fitts in the 800. Iverson and Fitts will join seniors Cooper Black and Andy Addink in the 4x400 relay.

The Tiger boys took fourth in the team race with 73.5 points, behind champion Ellensburg (185), East Valley Yakima (116.5) and Prosser (75). The Lady Tigers were sixth with 46 points. Ellensburg also took the girls title at 143, ahead of East Valley Yakima (124), Prosser (123) and Selah (117). The two-day meet ran May 19 and 22.
State qualifiers
Iverson returns to state in the 300 hurdles after finishing 10th as a junior in last year's preliminary race at 41.52, just missing the finals. Last week, he ran a personal-best 39.71 for second place at districts, shaving nearly two seconds off his time from a year ago. Iverson also took fourth in the 110 hurdles in a PB 15.90.
Fitts dropped a PB 1:57.09 for second place in the 800 to earn his first state track appearance, and also placed fourth in the 1600 at 4:27.00.
Mills returns to state in the 100 after taking 25th last year at a junior. He was third at districts with a state-qualifying time of 11.16, and finished fourth in the 200 at 22.99.

The 4x400 team of Iverson, Black, Addink and Fitts ran 3:25.66 for second at districts. At last year's state meet, the EHS relay of Iverson, Black, and Addink finished eighth in both the prelims (3:28.43) and finals (3:29.58) with Alex Belino. Fitts now steps in for Belino, who serves as a relay alternate after a midseason injury.
Tiger boys top finishers
At districts, Belino ran a PB 23.23 for sixth in the 200 and ran a leg on the Tigers' fourth-place 4x100 relay (44.63) with Addink, senior Casey Melcher and Mills.
Senior Jacob Reyes was sixth in the 110 hurdles in 16.28 and fifth in the 300 hurdles in a PB 41.31.
Sophomore Niko Diaz ran a PB 10:21.43 for seventh in the 3200.
Senior Tyler Kono took fourth in the discus with a throw of 139 feet, 0 inches. Senior Calvin Lybbert threw a PB 49 feet, 7.5 inches for sixth in the shot put. Senior Jacob Bartlett (142-10) and junior Benson Bair (140-11) finished seventh and eighth in the javelin.

Melcher cleared 5-6 for eighth in the high jump.
Lady Tigers top finishers
Senior Bella Wood ran a PB 16.72 for third in the 100 hurdles, just .11 behind second place. Sophomore Alexis St. Mary was eighth in a PB 17.81.

Junior Lila Buchmann took third in the javelin at 101-8.
Junior Abigail Chamberlain placed fourth in the 3200 in 12:02.24 with sophomore Savannah Harper sixth in 12:19.93. Sophomore Rebecca Wiser ran 5:43.28 for seventh in the 1600.

Senior Delanie Killinger jumped 32-7.5 for fifth in the triple jump. Sophomore Cassidy Cox cleared 4-8 for sixth in the high jump. Junior Alexis Edwards (8-0) and junior Ella Schultz (7-6) took sixth and eighth in the pole vault.
The 4x100 relay of freshman Addison Vasquez, St. Mary, freshman Staci Guerrero and senior Cynthia Villagran Morales took fourth in 54.57. The 4x200 of Villagran Morales, St. Mary, sophomore Brinlea Ohl and junior Jasmine Hernandez was fifth in 1:53.76. The 4x400 of Vasquez, sophomore Bailee Morris, Wiser and Villagran Morales placed sixth in 4:22.73.

State meet draws
The Tiger boys head to Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma for the state championships this Thursday through Saturday, May 28-30.
Mills draws lane 6 in heat 3 of 5 in the 100 prelim, next to Toppenish's Jack Davila, who qualified at 11.20. Mills brings a season-best 11.13 from May 14 at Grandview, just under his district mark of 11.16, and more than half a second under his state time from a year ago. The five heat winners, plus the next three best times advance to the finals.
Fitts runs lane 3 in heat 1 of 2 in the 800. He shares the heat with the fastest 2A qualifier in the field, Bainbridge's Ignacio Llorens (1:53.89). The top two runners from each heat plus the next four best times advance.
Iverson goes in heat 2 of 3 in the 300 hurdles, lined up next to East Valley's Preston Bates (39.56). Heat winners plus the next five best times advance.
The Tigers' 4x400 takes lane 3 in heat 3 of 3, drawing CWAC champion Ellensburg along with Prosser, Tumwater, Olympic and Sequim. Prosser qualified on time. Heat winners plus the next five best times advance. For Ephrata, sophomore Lance Melum, Reyes, Diaz and Belino serve as alternates.
