Tigers open CWAC with Selah sweep; place 4th/5th at Prosser Invite
Two team wins and six top-three finishes last week at CWAC opener and the Prosser Rotary Invite.
PROSSER β Sophomore Caleb Fitts won the boys 1600-meter run, junior Abigail Chamberlain placed second in the girls 3200, and the Tiger boys 4x400 relay quartet finished first to highlight Ephrata's efforts at the Prosser Rotary Invitational track and field meet on Saturday, April 25.
The Tiger boys finished fourth out of 19 teams with 64 points, trailing Southridge (72), Hanford (71) and East Valley of Yakima (68). The Lady Tigers placed fifth out of 18 teams with 49.5 points, behind Southridge (112), Prosser (100), Selah (91) and East Valley (52).
Boys
Fitts took the 1600 in a personal-best 4 minutes, 30.24 seconds, edging Hanford senior Malek Keller (4:32.48). A second Tiger win came from the 4x400 relay team of Fitts and seniors Maddax Iverson, Cooper Black and Andy Addink, who clocked 3:31.76 to hold off Toppenish (3:32.49).
Iverson finished third in the 300 hurdles at 41.12 and sixth in the 110 hurdles at 16.39. In the same events, senior teammate Jacob Reyes ran a season-best 16.78 for seventh in the 110 highs and added eighth in the 300 at 43.48. East Valley's Preston Bates won both races.
Black ran a season-best 2:06.13 for fourth in the 800. Sophomore Niko Diaz ran a personal-best 10:31.45 for fourth in the 3200. Senior Hunter Mills placed fourth in the 200 (23.16) and eighth in the 100 (11.40), and Addink was fifth in the 400 at 53.04. The Tiger 4x100 relay squad of Iverson, Addink, senior Casey Melcher and Mills crossed fifth in 45.08.
In field competition, Tiger senior Tyler Kono threw 138 feet, 4 inches for fourth place in the discus (won by River View senior Miguel Cruz at 158-11) while teammate and fellow senior Calvin Lybbert took eighth in the shot put with a personal-best 47-0.
Girls
In placing second for the Tigers in the 3200, Abigail Chamberlain ran a season-best 11 minutes, 56.24 seconds followed by sophomore teammate Savannah Harper at 12:36.39, also a season best for her.
Elsewhere on the track, senior Bella Wood took third in the 100 hurdles at 17.00. Sophomore Rebecca Wiser took ninth in the 1600 at a personal-best 5:40.35, and junior Hannah Malone followed at 11th in a season-best 5:49.19. Junior Hannah Fitts ran 2:34.25 for sixth in the 800. Senior Cynthia Villagran Morales clocked a season-best 1:04.74 for ninth in the 400. The Lady Tiger 4x400 team of Villagran Morales, Clairissa Johnson, Bailee Morris and Hannah Fitts crossed sixth in 4:30.05.
Competing in field events for Ephrata, senior Delanie Killinger placed third in the triple jump at 31 feet, 6 inches (won by Prosser sophomore Rebekah Den Hoed with a personal best 32-8.5) while Tiger sophomore Cassidy Cox cleared a personal-best 4-8 to finish fourth in the high jump.
Junior Lila Buchmann threw 103-8 for fifth in the javelin. Fellow Tiger juniors Alexis Edwards and Ella Schultz both pole vaulted personal or season bests, with Edwards clearing 8-0 for sixth and Schultz 7-6 for seventh.
SELAH β During their CWAC dual-meet opener on Thursday, April 23, both Ephrata squads swept for team wins. The boys beat Toppenish 81-64 and Selah 79-66. The Lady Tigers handled Toppenish 108-41 and Selah 79.5-70.5.
Boys
Both Tiger relay squads raced to wins. The 4x100 unit of Hunter Mills, Andy Addink, Casey Melcher and Maddax Iverson clocked in at 44.75. The 4x400 of Iverson, Caleb Fitts, Cooper Black and Addink won by nearly 10 seconds in 3:34.77. Addink also took first in the open 400 with a season-best 52.44.
In distance races, Fitts won the 800 in a personal-best 2:01.34 while Black won the 1600 in a season-best 4:51.34. Iverson won the 300 hurdles at 41.89 after placing second in the 110 hurdles at 16.55 (behind Selah senior Seth Lorton's PB 15.30) with senior Jacob Reyes third at 17.15.
Senior Tyler Kono won the discus at 135-8, with junior Cooper Kriete second at 132-6. Kriete tied Selah senior Jeffry Kinley at 46-0 to share first in the shot put. In the javelin, senior Jacob Bartlett threw a personal-best 148-9 for second behind Toppenish senior Jason Sanchez (155-8), and junior Benson Bair was fifth with a personal-best toss of 135-2.
Melcher cleared a personal-best 5-10 for second in the high jump and took third in the triple jump at 37-9. Mills placed second in the 100 at 11.44 and third in the 200 at 23.33. Toppenish senior Tegan Hernandez won both sprints with PB times of 11.43 and 23.18.
Girls
The Lady Tigers won seven events, with 1-2 finishes in both the 1600 and 3200. Sophomore Rebecca Wiser ran a personal-best 12:23.23 to win the 3200, followed by junior Hannah Malone's season-best 12:46.85. In the 1600, Chamberlain won in a season-best 5:51.20 with Savannah Harper second at a personal-best 5:53.32. And junior Hannah Fitts took first in the 800 in 2:35.45.
Senior Bella Wood won the 100 hurdles in a season-best 16.97, edging Selah senior Charlene Schutz (17.44 SB). Schutz went on to win the 300 hurdles at 51.85, trailed by Ephrata sophomore Brinlea Ohl in second at a personal-best 53.14 and freshman Addison Vasquez third at 53.77.
The Lady Tigers 4x100 unit of Vasquez, Cynthia Villagran Morales, Delanie Killinger and Staci Guerrero won in 55.11. A second relay win came from the 4x200 with Alexis St. Mary, Guerrero, Killinger and Villagran Morales crossing the tape in 1:55.01. Killinger also won the triple jump at 31-1, edging junior teammate Evangeline Springs second at a personal-best 31-0.
Junior Lila Buchmann came in second in the javelin at 100-5. Sophomore Cassidy Cox cleared 4-6 for second place in the high jump. Junior Alexis Edwards took second in the pole vault at 7-6, with junior Ella Schultz third at 7-0.
The Tigers return to track and field action Thursday, April 30 at the CWAC #2 tri-meet at Ellensburg, joining the host Bulldogs and Othello.
