ELLENSBURG — Junior Chance Lee ran 29 times for 265 yards and three touchdowns as Ephrata rolled to a 39-12 road victory over Ellensburg at Andreotti Field on Friday, Oct. 23.
The win kept Ephrata (4-4, 4-3 CWAC) alive, but barely, for the Central Washington Athletic Conference's fourth and final Week 10 playoff spot. The Tigers got help last week when Toppenish beat Quincy 31-0, but to qualify for the postseason, everything comes down to tonight (Thursday, Oct. 29).
Here are this Thursday evening's scenarios:
Ephrata hosts unbeaten Prosser at 7 p.m. at Kiwanis Field while Toppenish travels to Othello. The Tigers and Othello are both 4-3 in league play. According to CWAC sports information director Johnathan Gordon, if Ephrata beats Prosser and Toppenish beats Othello, the Tigers finish 5-3 and clinch the fourth playoff spot.
If Ephrata loses and Toppenish wins, then Ephrata, Othello and Toppenish finish tied at 4-4 and 1-1 against each other, and would play it off Monday, Nov. 2 at a neutral site. If Othello beats Toppenish tonight, the Huskies clinch the playoff berth outright because they beat the Tigers head-to-head in September.
In Friday's win over Ellensburg, Lee's 265 yards — including a 54-yard burst — was a season high and raised his season total to 892 rushing yards with nine touchdowns in eight games. As a team, Ephrata rushed for 320 yards and piled up 23 first downs.
Sophomore Krue Judkins opened scoring against the host Bulldogs with a 20-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. The snap on the extra-point kick was muffed; junior kicker Yahizee Alvarado scooped up the ball and tried to run it in for two but was stopped short of the goal line.
Lee scored his first touchdown of the night from the 8 with 5:40 left in the quarter for a 12-0 lead, but an attempted two-point conversion pass was intercepted.
Lee scored again on a 4-yard run with 11:11 left in the half, and junior quarterback Cooper Vasquez hit senior receiver Mitch Morford for the two-point conversion and a 20-0 lead in the second quarter.
On an ensuing series, senior lineman Cooper Kriete blocked an Ellensburg punt and recovered the ball at the Bulldogs' 20-yard line. Vasquez found Morford for an 11-yard TD toss, but Vasquez was stopped on the two-point keeper attempt.
Late in the second period, Lee broke for a 54-yard run to set up first-and-goal at the 1-yard line and scored from there. Alvarado's kick made it 33-0 at the break.
In the third period, Ephrata faced a red zone fourth-and-4, but an offside penalty on the Bulldogs gave the Tigers a first down at the 5-yard line. Vasquez capitalized by connecting with sophomore Jake Ayers in the end zone on the next play. Alvarado's kick hit the left upright and bounced wide. The quarter ended with Ephrata leading 39-0.
Owen Treadwell got the Bulldogs on the board with an 18-yard run with 9:14 left to play, then capped the scoring with a 35-yard touchdown reception from QB Dylan Gulezian late in the game. For the night, Ellensburg (0-7, 0-8) ran for 215 yards on 51 carries but completed just two passes.
For Ephrata, Vasquez finished 5 of 15 for 47 yards and the two touchdown passes, with one interception. Morford reeled in three passes for 39 yards and has seven touchdown catches this season. Judkins ran five times for 37 yards and a TD.
Defensively for the Tigers, junior EZ Chavez-Mabry intercepted a Gulezian pass and had three tackles and one tackle for loss. Kriete led Ephrata with five tackles, senior Owen Fitch had three tackles, four assists and two tackles-for-loss; and junior Tucker Simmons also contributed two TFLs.
Ephrata was penalized just five times for 26 yards — its fewest flagged miscues of the season.
Elsewhere around the CWAC last week: Prosser beat Selah 14-10 and clinched the league’s top seed at home in the matchup of unbeatens; the Mustangs (7-0), Selah (6-1) and East Valley (6-1) have all secured Round of 32 playoff berths. Also, East Valley beat Grandview 58-21, and Othello lost a nonleague game to West Valley of Yakima, 15-14.
Tonight's other games: East Valley plays at Selah for second place in the CWAC, Ellensburg plays at Quincy with both teams 0-7 and each looking for that first league victory, and Grandview hosts Rogers of Spokane in a nonleague game.
